Abstract

Male patients can present with a genital skin burning sensation that bears similarities to vulvodynia. The classification of vulvodynia by International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease of vulvodynia provides a blueprint for nomenclature and classification of Dysaesthetic penoscrotodynia (DPSD). Recognizing DPSD as generalized, localized, provoked, unprovoked and mixed will enable precise and objective communication between practitioners. Learning from research on the aetiology and management of vulvodynia can improve the care of patients suffering with DPSD. Scope remains for better acknowledgement of DPSD within the medical profession and improvement in its public profile in order to enhance patient care.

Abstract

Men may complain of penile and/or scrotal skin burning with no evidence of positive physical signs or investigations. The condition is cumbersome and leads to stress and disruption in social and sexual relationships. The patients report no response to previous medications (including antibiotics, antifungals and topical corticosteroids); and identify improvement in symptoms and quality of life on selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI). A similar condition has been recognized in the female patients (dysaesthetic vulvodynia). We report the occurrence of this condition in three men and suggest it being recognized as 'the male genital skin burning syndrome' (Dysaesthetic Peno/Scroto-dynia).

Abstract

The 'dynias' are a group of chronic focal pain syndromes with a predilection for orocervical or urogenital regions. Only exceptionally do they involve both sites in the same patient. Here, we report a case of simultaneous occurrence of dysaesthetic peno/scroto dynia and stomatodynia.
